I chose this office originally because the name suggested a family-oriented practice (it was honestly the only office at the time accepting new patients) and I expected at least some understanding that young children can sometimes struggle during appointments.
My older children have been patients here before and have generally done well. Today was my 3-year-old’s first dental visit, and I brought my children ages 6, 4, 3, and 1. The two youngest were in a stroller. My 3-year-old became very upset and started crying, and my youngest also became upset shortly after.
I fully understand that crying children can be disruptive and that not every office is equipped to continue an appointment in that situation. I was actively trying to calm everyone, redirect, and support my other children while the appointment got started.
What upset me was how quickly it felt like the decision had already been made that this wasn’t going to work. Within only a few minutes, it felt like there was no willingness to pause, discuss options, or try another approach. I was asked to go to the waiting room while my older children continued, and the appointment moved very quickly after that.
What I found most disappointing was the lack of communication and compassion. There was no conversation explaining expectations, no acknowledgment that I was trying to manage multiple young children, and no suggestions such as rescheduling, bringing children one at a time, or preparing differently for a first visit.
The hygienist was kind and professional throughout, and I appreciated her efforts. I apologize to her for being dismissive as I was beyond overwhelmed.
I left feeling embarrassed and dismissed. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this office to families with multiple young children or any children for that matter. If you are choosing this practice because the name suggests a particularly family-oriented or child-accommodating environment, that was not our experience.
Well wishes with your practice, Dr. Secrest.

I cannot say enough good things about Dr Secrest & his staff. My children actually get excited about going to the dentist, which is really a testament to how they treat their patients. They are always friendly & efficient. I highly recommend Alpena Family Dentistry.

I would give a 10/10 if it was an option! Dr. Secrest is an exceptional dentist, he has always been so kind and trusting. The staff is wonderful and always smiling (even under the masks!) I would recommend this office to anyone who asks, I couldn’t ask for anyone better to take care of my pearly whites!

Always a wonderful experience with the staff. Shelly and Annie go above and beyond to schedule appointments to fit my work schedule and if I have an emergency they are very amenable. Brenda, Dr.'s assistant is awesome and Cheryl does wonderful cleanings!
And I can't forget to mention Dr. Secrest, he's a great dentist and always honest and fair.

I just had a tooth pulled last week and thought Dr. Secrest and his assistant were compassionate, wonderfully kind, professional, and gentle. When the tooth came out I said 'that was easy' and later realized that it was easy for me! I think this dental clinic is top notch and that Dr. Secrest truly cares about the welfare of his patients. The office staff is also just as caring!
