He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology, with a minor in chemistry, from the University of New Mexico, and received his dental doctorate in 1990 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. He completed a four-year residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago before returning to Albuquerque to establish his practice. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology.
