He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, and his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He served a four-year residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center before entering private practice.
