My husband and I have been going to Dr. Akeel since we moved to Virginia in 2011. He is very thorough, explains everything, and is direct in what needs to be done. In certain situations he is generous in redoing a crown at no charge if he feels it has been compromised. The office staff are all very nice and helpful. Both my husband and I have been pleased with the dental services we’ve experienced at this office over the past 14 years.

My recent experience at this practice left me feeling shaken and confused. Immediately following my most recent — and second ever — visit, I asked ChatGPT for guidance because I didn’t know how to make sense of the interaction. This is what I wrote in that moment: “I haven’t been to a dentist in probably a decade and I know that my teeth need work, but I have been to the same dentist now for two appointments back to back and today the dentist talked to me very little, except to tell me to make sure that I am taking better care of my teeth. He did not ask me how I am taking care of my teeth and after he told me to take better care, I told him that I am flossing almost every day and brushing twice a day and he responded, ‘I see what I see.’ As a healthcare professional, I don’t think this is a reasonable way to do an assessment with a patient… What do I do?” As someone who values patient-centered care as a provider myself, looking back at my uncertainty in that moment angers me. A provider’s communication should not leave a patient feeling confused about whether their expectations for respectful, curious, patient-centered care are reasonable. Since that visit, I have been seen at two other dental practices. In both settings, I was treated with professionalism and respect, and it was made clear that expecting to be asked about my experiences and needs — not simply told what the provider believes — is a basic and appropriate standard of care. Unfortunately, that was not my experience at this office. When you’re seeking any healthcare professional, your experience matters. If you value collaborative, patient-centered communication, I would hesitate before choosing this practice.

After a lifetime of horrible dental work, my own negligence , insurance and health issues….. I was embarrassed, scared, and completely terrified to go to a dentist…15 years ago I walked into Dentistry by Design. Dr. Akeel and his staff were so understanding and supportive. I still get nervous, but at least I can smile pretty…. My family goes there as well… highly recommend

There is always excellent care to detail. I am very pleased and have been for many years. I only wish that Medicare covered dental because the costs are a lot to endure, but that’s probably true with any other dentist. A keel gives me a 10% senior discount to help with this concern., for which I am grateful.

I've been coming to Dr. Akeel since 2023 and have always had a good experience. His front desk and assistant staff is professional and personable. I always feel like I'm getting the best care and look forward to my next visit.
