I just had a HORRIBLE experience at dentistry of Carlsbad. If I could give zero stars I would. I moved to Carlsbad about a year ago so it took me some time to get adjusted with my new job and insurance to find a dentist. When I told them it has been over a year, I was met with looks of disappointment and their attitude changed towards me. The dental hygienist was very nice but Dr. Ortez came in the room and without saying anything or asking me any questions she just started criticizing my teeth and shoving her hands in my mouth. I was already so nervous to be there and I had told the hygienist how anxious I was, mainly because my jaw gets sore at the dentist from keeping my mouth open for so long. Then they both had their hands in my mouth and I was visible distraught and in pain. I was having a full panic attack at this point and felt like I was being suffocated. When I stopped them, the Dr. seemed so annoyed that I was having a panic attack. I felt so disrespected and that my full-blown panic was brushed aside and she told me to “just breathe ”. She offered me “laughing gas” and when I asked if it was covered by insurance. Since she wasn’t sure, I told her I’d have to pass but she said “if you get this nervous at the dentist, I think you’ll really need it”. I’ve never needed it before I was just so anxious because it had been a little bit since the last time I saw a dentist and it was exasperated by how poorly I was being treated. She continued to lecture me on flossing every 24 hours and after spending what felt like 3 hours (realistically 20 minutes) cleaning my teeth, I kept being sternly told to “keep my mouth open” my but jaw was so sore. The dentist didn’t even give me an opportunity to explain my sore jaw since she started without even asking if I had any comments or concerns. She then told me she couldn’t continue my cleaning and that I’d have to come back another time. Likely because I was still crying and shaking uncontrollably. I work in healthcare and have never witnessed such poor bedside manner in my life. They told me they’d call with another appointment to finish my cleaning but I sure as hell will not be returning. Now I completely understand why this was the only dentist that I called with immediate availability and 8 other dentist I called were booked out for 3 months. I left the dentist’s with half a cleaning, more jaw pain than I came in with, mascara all down my face and shaking uncontrollably by how disrespectful and degraded I felt. DO NOT COME HERE.

Needed a dentist because I hadn't been in a while and I lost a tooth. Looked online and found Dr ORTIZ-LUIS. I wanted someone who wasn't going to tell at me for not going to the dentist. She was very nice and explained everything needed to be done. I have been going to her for around 3yrs now and I would recommend her to anyone. She explains what needs to be done and you just let her know when you want it done. Joseph in the office is also great to work with. Great people.

I have been a patient of Dr. O for many years, it has to be close to 20 years by now. She has performed a variety of dental work for me, including fillings and crowns and regular cleanings. She had an oral surgeon come in to do a gum graft about 6 years ago and it looks like new. I give her my highest marks. Her husband Joseph is her office manager and he is very helpful. They are are a genuine Mom and Pop dentistry shop!
