I came to Northwest Periodontics at the lowest point, dentally, in my life. I was experiencing extreme mysterious pain in my molar, that multiple emergency visits to a regular dentist couldn't diagnose. I hadn't been to the dentist in years prior to this, nor had I even been brushing regularly. My gums were swollen, and I was embarrassed, and in so much pain.
These literal human angels were so kind to me -- never judged me, never lectured me about what I should have done, like so many dentists have. Dr. Corning is so kind and friendly, it is a pleasure to be in his care. Even as he was pulling my sad rotten molar out of my head, I was thinking "What a nice guy!" My hygienist Christal is so brilliant and lovely, and talking to her helped empower me to start brushing and flossing daily. Plus, she really likes birds, and, if requested, she'll tell you all about birds while she works on your mouth.
Their front office people are stellar at customer service. They never overcharge or upsell their services (in fact, they once, unprompted, sent me a refund check because my insurance ended up covering what I'd paid). Start to finish, my experience here has been excellent.
I've actually been meaning to write this review for months because my experience here really was that good. I wish that they could be my dentist all the time, but alas ... now my teeth and gums are healthy (!!!), so it's back to the regular dentist for me.

This place is special. Everyone treats you with care and respect. I called them when I wasn't receiving adequate care from my dentist. They went out of their way to fit me into the schedule, provide me with next steps, and refer me to an excellent endodontist. They excel at every aspect of patient care, and have the expertise and technology to provide topnotch service.

Dr Hovey does great work, and has a fantastic team! I had a gum graft done, which can be stressful but Dr Hovey and staff made me very comfortable with the procedure which was quick and done well. My dentist commented on the quality of work, and when I mentioned it was Dr Hovey they confirmed his reputation for quality. The dental assistants were also really great to work with, their names are escaping me, but everyone was kind and made sure I was comfortable and understood what was happening, which I appreciate. Dana and the front desk staff were also wonderful and super responsive to my incessant questions, and Sarah was overwhelmingly gracious in dealing with my insurance company for many months, despite being out of network. All around a great experience for a not-so-fun project. I would recommend them to anyone needing periodontal work, and will return should I need any myself.

2 yrs ago my husband needed 2 teeth extracted as a result of crunching on a tootsie roll sucker and fractured 2 teeth below the gum line. He received exceptional care with 2 implants later all excellently done by Dr. Hovey.
I too received outstanding care very similar to above by Dr. Hovey in 2013 and had a back bottom molar extracted 8 January 2026. His office staff and dental assistants were terrific, kind,
and helpful. Highly recommend Dr. Hovey for outstanding and expert periodontal treatment. LN (ret. RN)

I hate anything dental and have irrational fear of the dentist's chair. Despite flossing and brushing, I have bad gums. Dr. Corning and his team have been understanding of my fear and patient with my questions. I was terrified and had gum graft surgery. It's healing well and I'm very pleased.

Meet the Doctors
The practice is led by Dr. Lawrence R. Hovey, DMD, MS, and Dr. Patrick J. Corning, DMD, MS. Dr. Hovey is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Hovey earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from Harvard with magna cum laude honors, completed his periodontics certificate and Master of Science degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and leads the Portland Study Club, a group of dental specialists and restorative dentists focused on interdisciplinary treatment planning. Dr. Corning earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from Oregon Health Sciences University, completed a General Practice Residency at the Portland Veterans Administration Hospital, and finished his periodontal training and master's degree at the San Antonio School of Dentistry. Both doctors are certified in intravenous conscious sedation.
