I went in last month (Feb 2026) for a new patient consultation regarding the surgical extraction of a badly broken upper molar. He explained the procedure as cutting along the inside of the gum line of tooth 2,3 & 4 just to remove the #3 tooth. I asked why such a long incision was necessary for only one tooth and basically it was just how he did things. I asked what kind of injection he would be using to numb the area, he said he would be using General Anesthesia and informed me I would need someone to drive me home. I said I did not want to be put under and I would be good with laughing gas or numbing injections. After the consultation ended he said an assistant would be in shortly with the Estimate.
A few minutes later she came in with the estimate at just under $3,000 with over $1,000 for General Anesthesia alone! This did not feel like a collaboration regarding my treatment plan and I was clearly not on board with paying so much so I ended up going with a different Dentist (not an oral surgeon) who removed the tooth without any incisions. He added my own blood plasma (L-prf) to the area the tooth came out of to aid in bone regrowth and used only numbing injections. Everything went smoothly and the total price was $460.

This is your sign to go to Dr Oakley if you have any oral surgery needs. As so many other reviews have said, absolutely a 5-star service and staff (i'd give six stars if i could!). Julie, Cherron, Amanda and the ENTIRE staff are incredibly kind, prompt, efficient, and help make sure you have as smooth of an experience as possible. If you have any nerves or concerns, they work with you to make sure you have 100% confidence in the process, the treatment, and the timeline - no matter how long the conversation takes. Dr. Oakley took the time to sit and field a multitude of my questions - both about dental implants and beyond, and I left with great advice, knowledge, and confidence in my surgical team. Truly cannot say enough good things about this team. It is rare to find a team that cares as much as Dr. Oakley's does about their patients!!

The staff was nice and friendly — only to counterbalance what an arrogant abrasive person the doctor is. The worst “bedside manner” I’ve received from a medical “professional” in my 64 years. Instead, I went to KC Dental Implants where I received top notch service from genuinely nice professional folks who actually care about their patients. It was a completely different experience clear across the board; price, timeliness, attitude, facility, education and communication. I wouldn’t hire Richard Oakley to scrub my toilet.

They were very kind to my elderly father. They even allowed us to leave in back door making it easier for for my dad to get to his vehicle. Wonderful staff.

Oakley Oral Surgery is an oral and maxillofacial surgery practice with two Kansas offices, one in Mission and this south location at 6200 W. 135th Street, Suite 100 in Overland Park, on the northeast corner of 135th Street and Lamar Avenue. The Overland Park office opened in June 2003 and is described on the practice's website as having a modern, Pacific Northwestern feel, complete with a waterfall in the reception area. It is open Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm. The practice serves patients from Overland Park, Mission, Prairie Village, Leawood, Lenexa, Shawnee, Olathe, and the greater Kansas City area on both sides of the state line.
Dental implants are a central focus here. The practice offers traditional implants for single or multiple missing teeth, implant supported overdentures, All-on-4 full arch treatment (which it calls Refresh Smile), bone grafting and sinus grafting for implant patients, metal free ceramic implants, and computer guided implant surgery. A dedicated dental implant coordinator works with each patient through the entire implant process, and the office has a registered nurse on staff along with certified oral and maxillofacial surgical assistants. The practice also provides wisdom teeth removal, tooth extractions, facial trauma care, oral pathology, treatment of impacted canines, and general anesthesia and intravenous sedation, and it uses digital scanning and three dimensional imaging in treatment planning.
Meet the Doctors
Oakley Oral Surgery is led by Richard M. Oakley, DDS FACOMS, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Oakley is a Kansas native who earned his dental degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in 1989 and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 1993, then moved to Kansas City to join the practice. He is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the Kansas Dental Association, and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiologists, holds hospital staff appointments in the Overland Park area, and directs the Great Plains Study Club, the local Kansas City chapter of the Seattle Study Club.
