He earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from Brigham Young University in 1997 and a dental degree from the University of California, San Francisco in 2001. He served as a general dentist in the U.S. Navy for four years, then completed a four year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Baylor University Medical Center and Texas A&M Health Science Center in 2009, followed by four more years as an oral surgeon in the Navy.
