After neglecting to have my wisdom teeth removed until I was in my 20s, they became an issue and I had to have them removed. I chose Shawnee Hills over OMS of Carbondale due to insurance reasons, and ultimately, I'm so glad that I chose Dr. Burton's office over OMS Carbondale.
I have always been hesitant to get dental work done after multiple bad experiences with procedures. Dr. Burton and his entire staff took the time and extra care to ensure I was fully educated about the procedure, the risks, potential complications, and the side effects in order to ease my anxiety. They were able to get my procedure scheduled and done faster than any other office in the area could. Unfortunately, I did experience a rare complication associated with my wisdom teeth removal, but I was educated about this risk before my surgery, and after it became obvious that I was experiencing a complication, Dr. Burton and his staff followed up with my healing process for almost an entire year until I moved out of state and could no longer receive continued care. While the complication never resolved on its own, the aftercare I received far exceeded my expectations, and I have been able to thrive with better oral health and learn to navigate the lasting nerve damage.
If I was still in the area, I would absolutely return to Shawnee Hills OMS for the rest of my maxillofacial surgery needs. I highly recommend Dr. Burton and his entire staff. You can trust that you'll be in caring and capable hands.

Dr Burton and staff were very courteous, polite, professional and helpful. The office and patient rooms were very clean and organized. I feel very lucky to have such a skilled and talented surgeon surrounded by such amazing group of dedicated professionals right here in Southern Illinois. I highly recommend Dr Burton and his devoted staff for all your oral and maxillofacial surgery needs.

I received a bone graft and dental implant through Dr. Burton and his top-notch staff who provided excellent treatment and care, and displayed the utmost professionalism and expertise serving me. Patient care was given with a personal touch and your comfort is their main priority! I highly recommend Dr. Burton for all of your oral and maxillofacial surgical needs.

When I was 14 before I got braces, I came here to get my wisdom teeth surgically removed. By Jonathan W. Burton. Instead of pulling all three for some reason, they advised me to keep one of my wisdom teeth to come up later because when I was a younger, I got a front canine teeth pulled So to make up for that, they wanted me to keep my back wisdom teeth, so maybe that tooth could come in to replace that. So, instead of taking out that wisdom tooth, he cut an incision and told me it should come up, which it did not instead I got a dry socket I thought it was the stupidest thing ever, but they are the professionals so I trusted their opinion.. fast-forward now I’m 26. My back tooth (that’s not the wisdom tooth) fell out and just now that wisdom tooth is coming up and I have to get that one surgically removed AGAIN so I don’t know what the point was of Keeping it in my mouth or making me get a dry socket, because the incision. My tooth and never came up till years later and I know it’s the reason my other tooth fell out. I was born and raised in Southern Illinois too And I can’t believe he treat patients like this and then delete their reviews.. He says people are bashing his business, I have documentation and proof that I had this work done by him.. I have to get my tooth Removed now.. This is very traumatizing because I trusted these professionals and I have to go through this wisdom tooth surgery again when most people only have to do this once.

Dr. Burton and his staff are amazing!!! I have had two dental implants done by Dr. Burton. Each time, the entire process was smooth, professional, and reassuring. I’m extremely happy with my results and highly recommend them!!!

Meet the Doctors
Jonathan W. Burton, DMD, is the practice's oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. A native of Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, he earned an associate degree from Southeastern Illinois College and a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, then received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree with high honors from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in 1998. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1998 to 2003, with advanced training in anesthesia, medicine, general surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Before opening Shawnee Hills Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Carbondale in June 2009, he was a partner in a group oral surgery practice in Belleville and Edwardsville and an assistant professor in oral surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. He became board certified in 2007 and passed recertification in 2017. Dr. Burton has served as president of the Southern Illinois Dental Society and holds Fellow status with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
