If only there were a black hole to choose from instead of stars...
I was referred to The Smile Mission by a coworker who was very pleased with the work they did. Showed up on time for my appointment, went thru typical in-processing, then sat in a dental chair waiting for the doctor.
Within five minutes I was refused service. Was I rude? Not at all. Was I difficult? Not at all. Did I act unbecoming? Not at all. So, why then was i refused service?
According to the doctor, my complaining about my broken teeth meant that I would be unhappy with the permanent denture, because they might break. Yes, according to this physician, one of my reasons for needing replacement surgery disqualified me.
Let me be clear, I have seen 2 other offices who have confirmed I am a top tier candidate for replacement with 3 missing teeth, one tooth broken to the jawline, another breaking, infection, and near constant pain from crooked teeth/chewing most of my life. The issue for me, like so many others, is cost and at $45000, i need a viable alternative, which Smile Mission seemed to be. And yet, in spite of an obvious and plain diagnosis, the doctor at Mission Smile denied me out of personal opinion.
I have wracked my brain trying to square this. What dentist tells their patients, "no, i won't help you because you'll complain"? I hesitate to say I was discriminated against because as a white male I am well aware of my privilege, but the fact I was the only Caucasian in the entire office of patients and employees does concern me, as well the fact that from introduction, the doctor was dismissive and condescending.
Whatever the actual reasoning, I would caution anyone against visiting this business. As a side note to this, they also require their patients promise they will only see The Smile Mission for their dental care - is that even legal?

A client of mine recommended this office...I am so glad he did.
Huge staff ...everyone is always happy and pleasant to be around.
State of the art equipment.
Affordable...let me say that again, AFFORDABLE.
Over the past three weeks I spent 17 hours in the chair...deep cleaning, 3 extractions, root canal, bone grafts, crown...very little pain...totally worth it.
Very pleased with the results.

Meet the Doctors
The Ocala location is led by Dr. Michael Urbina, who the practice says has nearly 20 years of experience in dentistry. He began his career in Lima, Peru, where he owned and operated two dental clinics. After moving to the United States, he completed an internship in orthodontics with the University of Florida and then completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the University of Florida. The Smile Mission itself was founded by Dr. Dustin Pfundheller, who the site describes as an international speaker who has volunteered in more than 30 countries.
