I had my impacted wisdom teeth removed at True North Oral Surgery, and overall my experience was very positive. From the moment I walked in, the staff was friendly, professional, and made me feel comfortable. They took the time to explain the procedure clearly and answered all of my questions, which really helped ease my nerves.
I called on March 5 to schedule my consult and was able to get in by March 12, with surgery scheduled just a few days later on March 17. The quick scheduling was really appreciated and made the whole process feel efficient and well-organized.
My surgeon, Travis Johnson, was polite, direct, and confident, which gave me a lot of reassurance going into the procedure. The surgery itself went smoothly, and I felt like I was in very capable hands throughout.
My recovery has been going well, and I appreciated the clear aftercare instructions—they made it easy to know what to expect and how to manage healing. The office called me to check in a few hours after my surgery to check in which was very kind.
A fun bonus—after surgery you get to pick out Cold Stone Creamery ice cream to take home, which was a nice touch after the procedure.
Overall, I would definitely recommend True North Oral Surgery to anyone needing wisdom teeth removal or oral surgery. They provided great care, professionalism, and a smooth experience from start to finish.

I can't say enough great stuff about True North. From the ladies at the front desk, to Ariel who helped with insurance information, all the way to Dr. Volmer. Everyone was incredibly kind, happy and helpful. They made sure I knew everything about the procedure and things that might happen during/after the procedure. They definitely set you up for success. I highly suggest going here for an extractions. Bonus was the Cold Stone!!!

Dr. Volmer was excellent and very thorough. I was initially very leery about who to go with, as Dr. Ackerman—who cared for my firstborn—was exceptional. My sister, Dr. Kara Conry, and my brother-in-law, Dr. John Conry (both dentists), with my brother-in-law having previously served as Head of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota, also helped me seek a second opinion elsewhere. While that experience was positive, it wasn’t what I was expecting or looking for.
Dr. Volmer reassured me in much the same way as Dr. Ackerman. He even had his nurse follow up with a phone call just hours after the procedure and personally took an on-call phone call from me, which I truly appreciated. It doesn’t matter that this is my third child—every child is different, and as the mother of my final “baby,” the entire practice was truly exceptional.

Dr Vollmer is the BEST! He listens and takes his time to answer all your questions. He is very gentle and kind. He has taken out wisdom teeth for a few of my kids and I absolutely trust him. I recommend him to everyone!

True North Oral Surgery & Implants is an oral and maxillofacial surgery practice with an office at 1420 South Lake Street, Suite 200 in Forest Lake, Minnesota. The practice also has offices in Woodbury and Maplewood, and its Forest Lake location serves patients from nearby communities including Hugo, Lino Lakes, Wyoming, Chisago City, Lindstrom, North Branch, Cambridge and Rush City in Minnesota, as well as St. Croix Falls, Osceola, Luck, Centuria and Turtle Lake in Wisconsin. Services include dental implants, wisdom tooth extractions, bone grafting, sinus lifts, corrective jaw surgery, oral pathology, oral surgery for orthodontics and other oral surgery procedures. A referral from a general dentist is welcome but not required to schedule a consultation.

Meet the Doctors

The practice website notes that he designed and opened the Forest Lake office and serves as Director of the True North Professional Studies chapter of the Seattle Study Club. Dr. Johnson earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2013 and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.
