Dr. Bertels was wonderful, but when she had to go on maternity leave in the middle of the implant process, Dr. Scanlon took over and that's when the one star comes into play. During my final implant procedure Dr. Scanlon dropped the implant hex drive down my throat. Luckily I am young and the drill bit sized hex didn't lodge in my airway and I was able to cough it up. After this occurred Dr. Scanlon said "Woah! I guess I need to go home - that's never happened before" and he then proceeded to tell an assistant who walked in the room "I chucked the hex to the back of her throat". Apparently, according to medical journals, there's a simple method to prevent this from happening - tying the hex to the operator's ring with dental floss or silk ligatures. Dr. Scanlon clearly hadn't taken this precaution. Long story, not so short, I didn't believe that after potentially aspirating a dental tool, I should have to pay the small amount that was left on my bill. Not only did Dr. Scanlon not apologize, but he sent me to collections over the remaining balance. I hope he's currently taking precautions. Also, for the record, I would give Dr. Bertels 5 stars.

Such a friendly staff and doctors! They really make you feel comfortable. Hardly any wait and right down to business without skipping pleasantries. Had to commute 2 and a half hours every time and not even upset about it. They know what theyre about. Not to mention the state of the art equipment and facility!

Wonderful staff!! Even when they were viciously attacking (doing their tough job) my mouth, they were kind and walked me thru everything. Hands down best periodontics business I've ever been too.

Dr. Scanlon and his staff are absolutely amazing! I needed a decades old root canal removed and bone graph placed in preparation for an implant. The patient care by all staff was outstanding - warmly compassionate, efficient and very professional. I chose to have this procedure done while awake (without sedation), and I鈥檇 do it all over again under the incredibly skilled care of Dr. Scanlon! He was very kind, thorough, and efficient, yet very careful to ensure I was comfortable and not in pain. His assistant Brenda was wonderful, as well, in her care and kindness (warm blankets, reassuring demeanor, checked often to ensure I was doing okay.) Countless extra measures were taken to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Everyone took exceptionally good care of me - I was pampered. My local dentist recommended Dr. Scanlon from Pierre, and I am so glad he did! (I write as someone who had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed from below the gum level without sedation almost 40 years ago, and until today I would have silent panic attacks whenever I went to the dentist. Dr. Scanlon and his staff changed that today! So very thankful to him and his staff! Look no further. Book your appointment today. 馃槉

I highly recommend Dr Scanlon and his team. I recently had dental implants. They explained the steps of the procedure throughly. I was awake throughout the whole process and they were very attentive to making sure it was painless. I was amazed and appreciated how quick the process was. Dr Scanlon and his team have a genuine caring personality and make you feel very comfortable.

He graduated with honors from Creighton University School of Dentistry in 2008 and completed his periodontics residency in 2011 at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he served as chief resident, with training in advanced periodontal therapy, bone grafting, implant therapy, and intravenous sedation. He is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, the South Dakota Dental Association, the Black Hills District Dental Society, and the Academy of Osseointegration. Mattie Bertels, DDS, is also a Periodontist and Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She began her career as a dental hygienist, graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 2017, and completed a three-year periodontal residency there in the Department of Surgical Specialties. Mark A. Terry, DDS, is a Periodontist and Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He earned his dental degree from the UCLA School of Dentistry in 2010, where he was inducted into the National Dental Honor Society, and completed a three-year periodontal residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Department of Surgical Specialties. He is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, and the South Dakota Dental Association.
